Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a real workhorse in our body. It is involved in about 100 enzymatic reactions and, as a coenzyme P5P, for example, ensures that the blood pigment hemoglobin can bind more oxygen in the lungs. Before it can be used for this purpose, it must be converted into its coenzyme form P5P, or pyridoxine-5-phosphate, in the liver . The greater bioavailability of the P5P form of vitamin B6 is due to the fact that it is administered in its already converted (coenzyme) form, thus eliminating the energy-intensive and not always efficient step of converting vitamin B6 into pyridoxine in the liver .
