Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid found primarily in algae. It is fat-soluble and has a red-orange color, which is also adopted by organisms that feed on algae containing astaxanthin (shrimp, lobster, salmon) to color their meat. NOW Astaxanthin is obtained from algae Haematococcus pluvialis (GMO-free), which are part of plankton and its natural component is xanthophylls lutein and canthaxanthin and also another important carotenoid, beta-carotene.
